Over 190K Home Depot ceiling fans recalled due to reports blades flew off, hit people

Ceiling fans sold by Home Depot are being recalled due to potential for the blades to detach during use and cause injury, CBS reports.

United States Consumer Product Safety Commission posted a recall notice for the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fans, produced by Florida-based manufacturer King of Fans. Prior to the recall, 47 reports were made of the blades detaching on this model. In two incidents, the rogue blade struck someone, and in four separate incidents the dislodged blade cause property damage.

The home improvement store, which sold more than 190,000 of the ceiling fans, was the only retailer of the now-recalled product. About 182,000 were sold in the U.S., and an additional 8,800 were sold through Home Depot in Canada.

The fans were available online and in stores from April through October, priced at about $150.

The recall notice instructs those who purchased the defective fans to avoid further use and contact the manufacturer for a free replacement.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the ceiling fans and inspect the ceiling fans using the instructions at www.kingoffans.com/MaraRecall.htm or by visiting the QR code listed in the recall press release,” the notice reads. “If consumers observe blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body or movement of the clip during inspection, consumers should immediately contact King of Fans for a free replacement ceiling fan.”
